What is the meaning of life?
Why am I here? What is my purpose? Almost everyone asks these questions, or questions like them, at some point in their lives. Few people have ever received a satisfying answer. Why?
Only the maker knows
The only one who knows with certainty the purpose of something is the maker of that thing. You were made, therefore you do have purpose, and meaning, and you are here for a reason.
What does your maker say your purpose is?
Your purpose can be found in what God your maker tells you to do. The purpose of something can be found in what it does. For example, a car transports people, therefore the purpose of a car is to transport people. So what is it that God tells us to do?
“And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?””
(Matthew 22:35–36 ESV)
A commandment is a communication that tells you what to do.
“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.””
(Matthew 22:37–40 ESV)
So now you have the answer to that age old question “What is the meaning of life?” You were made for love. You were made for the purpose of loving God and your neighbour.
You can’t do it on your own
When God made us, He made us to be dependant on Him. We need to be filled full of God to accomplish our purpose.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
(John 15:5 ESV)
When God says “apart from me you can do nothing” that includes doing what you were made for.
No person will ever obtain the satisfaction of accomplishing their purpose apart from God.
