Finding Truth is more desirable than finding hidden treasure. Hidden treasure is material, a collection of glorious and beautiful things made of gold, silver, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. Truth is spiritual and the benefits of truth are also spiritual. They are hope, joy, peace, love, purity, freedom, life, and much more. Given a choice, between having material treasure or spiritual Truth, the wise person will always choose Truth because Truth is of far greater value than that of hidden treasure. The search for truth is well worth the effort.
Almost 2000 years ago (somewhere between AD 30 and AD 36) Pontius Pilate the governor of the Roman province of Judaea asked Jesus “What is truth?”
What is truth?
Jesus tells us very clearly what truth is in His prayer to His father God.
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
(John 17:17 ESV)
So the simple answer to the question “What is truth?” is that God’s Word is truth.
There is however more to understand about the truth. Jesus identified Himself as being the truth.
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
(John 14:6 ESV)
If Jesus says that “God’s Word is truth” and says “I am … the truth”, then He is saying that He is the Word of God.
The apostle John testifies that Jesus is the Word of God the only son born to His Father.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
(John 1:14 ESV)
So the complicated answer to the question “What is truth?” is that God’s Word is truth and Jesus is God’s Word.
It is very important to know, Truth, God’s Word, and Jesus, are one and the same. As you grow in knowledge of truth you will discover that it runs even deeper than this.
Power of Truth
What can Truth do?
Below are three questions. If you measure yourself by God’s laws and are honest with yourself you will answer yes to all three.
Are you a slave to sin?
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(John 8:31–36 ESV)
Truth will set you free from sin.
Are you unclean?
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”
(Ephesians 5:25–27 ESV)
Truth will make you clean / holy / pure.
Are you dying?
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
(John 6:63 ESV)
Truth will give you life.
Truth will set you free form sin, make you clean, give you life, and along with these come hope, joy, peace, and the greatest of all love.
